How To Use Videos To Maximise Results on Local Searches

  • March 11, 2020

The reality is that videos engage your audience a lot better than text or a static image. Latest evidence in Local SEO shows that nearly 50% of internet users look for videos related to a product or service before visiting a store and that 81% of businesses use video as a marketing tool — up from 63% over the last year.

For local businesses, it’s no longer enough to just rank in the results. Your businesses presence in the SERPs has to stand out in order to attract possible new customers. Videos can play a critical part in a business’s ability to engage with our client base.

Video on Google My Business

Videos can be submitted to a Google My Business listing by both businesses and users. However, many businesses have yet to take advantage of this feature; it seems to be popular with customers; local attractions seem to have the most videos such as farmer’s markets, museums, etc.

Google’s current Video Guidelines:

  • Duration: Up to 30 seconds long.
  • File Size: Up to 100 MB.
  • Resolution: 720p or higher.

Getting Started with Google My Business Videos

Google My Business allows videos up to 30 seconds in length, and customers and owners can add those videos. As a Google My Business account manager, first, you should log in to your GMB account.

You will see all the locations you are currently managing in the dashboard:

Click on the location to which you wish to add your video. Then you will see the ‘ Add Videos ‘ icon in the Overview tab.

Or you can add a video by clicking on the blue + sign:

Clicking the ‘ Add Video ‘ button gives you the option to drag the video you want to upload or pick the video from your computer to make it super quick.

Google says that once you upload your video it can take up to 24 hours for it to display.

If you decide you don’t like the video you’ve added you can quickly delete it by clicking on the trash can icon and hitting ‘ Delete ‘.

What you need to know:

    1. You must film your videos at your place of business. These can’t be stock videos or a compilation of fake stock pictures with music over them as they’ll be considered irrelevant and can be taken down.
    2. Users appear to be able to add any video type to a listing. Customers uploads will be labelled with their username. With anything, material the user contributes has the potential to be amazing or the worst. A lot of customer videos will be posted from their phones, they are mostly of poor quality, and they don’t have great sound.
    3. Users and business owners can report videos for removal.

If after you flag and complain the video is not deleted, you can take your request further by contacting GMB support through Twitter, or the community forum to seek help / advice from a top contributor or other users.

Google can review and remove videos at any time if the content is not relevant to your business.

4. When videos are added they will appear in the listing under the photos section. To get to the videos, the photos must be selected / clicked. If 2 or more videos are added to the listing, a Videos tab (that is accessed through the images again) will be triggered. There is also a tab By Owner, and it is also possible to access videos added by the business in that category.

Ideas for videos:

Given Google’s 30-second length, if you’re just starting with videos keep it simple with:

  • A welcome video.
  • The Company mission and goals.
  • Demonstrate how you package and ship one of your products.
  • Highlight an employee and show them off.
  • Give a tour of your office/workplace.
  • Video of daily operations, with customers ordering or getting a service done.
  • Having a company picnic? Take along the camera and share the fun.
  • Feature how a product is produced.
  • Interview employees about what they like best about working for your company.
