Process

How Website Development Works

Establish a Business Case

Assess whether a new website supports your business and marketing objectives.

Sometimes, refreshing an existing site and investing the remaining budget in programs like SEO or Google Ads can be more cost-effective.

If you don’t have an in-house marketing team, we strongly recommend engaging a full-service agency at this point (rather than during Step 3).

1
Develop a Website Strategy

Work out what you want to achieve with the new build.

That includes accurately diagnosing the business problem(s) you want it to solve, specifying success metrics, choosing your CMS, conducting SEO and user research, and confirming your budget.

2
Plan Implementation

Think about how you’ll implement your strategy.

Your planning should cover contractor procurement, project roles, your sitemap, and any specific software or functionality requirements.

Note: if you engaged an agency earlier in the construction process, they’ll work with you to develop a feasible plan.

3
Build Your Site

Typically, implementation starts with drafting the copy (the text and information throughout your site). Your agency should present copy in both Word documents and low-fidelity wireframes.

Once you’ve signed off on all copy, your agency will develop mockups – static images of your website that look identical to the final product. At this stage, you’ll provide feedback on the visual aspects of your site.

Finally, after you’ve approved each page’s design, your agency will render those pages in a fully functional staging site.

4
Test Your Site

Before your site goes live, both you and your agency will thoroughly review and test it in different environments.

5
Launch Your Site

Your new site enters the wilds of the internet.

In the hours and days after launch, your agency will keep testing things like analytics, URL redirects, and form integrations.

They should also provide basic training that covers things like logging into your CMS and making minor edits.

(You shouldn’t be reliant on an external developer to change critical information like your pricing.)

6
Maintain Your Site

A website isn’t a one-and-done project.

In addition to ongoing marketing activities like SEO and CRO, your agency will provide technical support to keep your site secure, up to date, and performing at its best.

How to Actually Build a Website (for Business Leaders)

Questions

Web Development FAQs

How much does it cost to build a website?

There’s no easy way to answer that question – every website (and brand) is different. The average small business normally needs around 10 pages on their site. That includes:

  • a home page
  • a general products/services page
  • one page for each specific
  • product/service
  • an about page
  • a contact page.

You can expect a 10-page WordPress site to cost you around $5,000.

E-commerce sites tend to be structured a little differently. Rather than custom-built product/service pages, we typically create a product page template that can then be populated using a CMS like Shopify or WooCommerce. That’s ideal if you frequently update your offerings – you can easily make the changes you need without paying us for development hours.

Can ChatGPT build a website?

At the time of writing, it can’t. There are automated website builders that incorporate AI – but we wouldn’t recommend them if you want your site to drive revenue. They almost always produce weak messaging, bland design, and bloated code that fails basic SEO and accessibility requirements. (Several of our clients who used AI site builders before coming to us complained specifically about extreme slowness and a lack of functionality.) We are a little biased, so don’t take our word for it. Try some of the most popular AI site builders yourself:

  • Squarespace
  • Wix
  • GoDaddy

A good website relies on differentiation to drive revenue. Consumer-grade mediocrity – which is all LLMs are capable of – won’t move the needle.

How long does a website build take?

It depends how large your site is, what assets you provide, and how responsive you are during the construction process. On average, a 10-page website takes around 2 months to go from discovery to launch.

Read our guide to website construction – written for business leaders – to find out more about the build process.

What are common hidden website development costs?

If you’re evaluating different web development agencies, make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Try asking these questions before you sign any construction agreement.

  • What CMS is being used? WordPress.org is a free, open-source platform – but other CMSs, like Shopify and WordPress.com, charge a monthly fee.
  • Is hosting and domain registration included? Normally, you’ll need to pay a hosting provider extra for both.
  • Who owns the site after launch? Some agencies offer discounted build prices, then retain ownership over your site to keep you on a monthly retainer with them.
  • Are you paying for SEO? Many agencies claim their sites are ‘SEO-ready’ – which simply means they’ve been built in line with modern development standards (not that they’re actually optimising your site to rank in Google).
  • Who provides the copy and visual assets? Copywriting isn’t included by default in most agencies’ packages.
Are basic integrations, like payment processing for e-commerce sites, included?
  • Will the agency set up analytics and tracking tools – like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Microsoft Clarity – for you?
  • How many rounds of revisions are included? No agency gets a build perfect on its first attempt, so make sure whatever package you choose includes room for refinement.
  • Do minimum performance and accessibility criteria, like WCAG compliance, need to be met?
  • Who’s working on your site? Are you engaging qualified, Australian-based professionals or offshore subcontractors?
  • Is there a defects remediation period included after handover? You don’t want a site that looks nice but starts breaking a few weeks after you take ownership of it.
  • Does the agency have insurance if something goes wrong with your build?
  • Do you have a clear, legally binding contract that specifies inclusions and exclusions?

Do I have full ownership rights to the website you develop for me?

Yes, you do. Once development is complete and you’ve paid your final invoice, we’ll hand over all logins to you. If you’ve engaged us for ongoing marketing or technical support, we’ll set up a separate vendor login to comply with cybersecurity best practices.

Do you provide website training?

Yes, we do. Each of our website packages includes an hour of live, hands-on training with one of our developers (which we’ll also record and share with you). That session will cover basics like:

  • logging into your CMS’s admin area
  • making minor copy changes, like editing pricing
  • uploading and swapping out images
  • viewing form submissions
  • managing users securely.

Your website is a critical business asset – you should never be reliant on an external vendor to manage it. (Avoid agencies that won’t provide training or hand over logins. In all likelihood, they’re trying to keep you dependent on them so they can charge you steep hourly fees for minor updates.)

Will my website be mobile-responsive?

Yes, it will be. Mobile responsiveness is a bit like accessibility and loading speed. It’s table stakes for any modern site. If your site isn’t mobile-responsive, you’re compromising your SEO and making it impossible for anyone to interact with your business on a smartphone.

We test every website we build across all available screen sizes and dimensions before launch. That process includes both virtual device emulators and actual hardware – even the best emulators can sometimes fail to catch errors that show up in real-world testing.

Are your website builds templated or custom?

Each website we create is built specifically for the brand in question. The strategy, the structure, the visual design, and the copy (if you request it) are all developed in coordination with you.
